Best AI Tools for Literature Reviews: Use Each One for the Right Job
A literature review is a comparison of studies, not a stack of summaries. The most valuable tool changes as you move from discovering papers to deciding what the evidence means.

1. Semantic Scholar and ResearchRabbit - Discover studies
Start with your research question and the terms a paper might use for its population, intervention, and outcome. Search a subject database as well as a broad index. Semantic Scholar can surface nearby literature; ResearchRabbit can help follow relationships among papers. Neither replaces a documented search strategy when your assignment calls for one.
- Record your search strings and date.
- Save plausible papers with citation metadata.
- Write why each paper is in scope before reading it deeply.
2. Zotero and an evidence matrix - Compare studies
Save each paper in Zotero and record the details you need to compare in an evidence matrix. An assistant can explain an unfamiliar method or help extract candidate details. Return to the original paper for design, sample, limitations, and exact wording. Two studies with similar conclusions may be answering different questions.
| Study | Question and method | Finding | Limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Study A | Who was studied? How was it measured? | What did the authors actually observe? | What can the design not establish? |
| Study B | Is the population or method comparable? | Does it agree, qualify, or conflict? | What changes the interpretation? |
3. Thezis - Write a synthesis from the evidence
Weak: Study A found an effect. Study B also found an effect. Stronger: Both studies point in the same direction, but Study B’s longer follow-up tests whether the pattern persists; their samples differ, so the estimates should not be treated as interchangeable.
The second version states a relationship between studies and names the boundary of the inference.
Draft the comparison in Thezis once your matrix contains enough detail to support a paragraph. Write the common pattern first, then the difference that matters, then the uncertainty. Reopen the original sources before finalizing the citation.
Check every claim against the original paper
For each factual sentence, ask which study supports it and whether that study’s population, method, and time frame match your wording. Delete generic claims that survived from an AI summary but have no recoverable source.
