How to paraphrase a research paper without changing its meaning

To paraphrase a research paper, understand the passage, put it aside, express the relevant idea in your own sentence, then compare your version against the source and cite it. The wording can change. The population, finding, conditions, and degree of certainty cannot quietly change with it. Try the short exercises below before you edit your next paragraph.

Which version would you keep?

All study passages in this workshop were written for this guide. Their data and study labels are fictional, so they demonstrate writing decisions without giving you invented publications to cite.

Original practice passage

In interviews with 24 first-year commuters at one university, participants described using recorded lectures to work around travel disruptions. The study did not assess examination performance.

Version A

Recorded lectures improve first-year students’ exam results by helping them overcome commuting problems.

Version B

First-year commuters interviewed at a single university said lecture recordings helped them manage disrupted journeys; the research did not examine exam outcomes (fictional practice source).

Version B is the defensible paraphrase. Version A introduces an improvement in exam results that was never measured, turns interview accounts into a causal finding, and expands the claim beyond the studied group. Its smooth wording cannot repair those changes. Version B preserves the limits and signals that the statement comes from a source.

For a real paper, replace the practice-source label with the correct citation in your required style. Purdue’s paraphrasing guidance recommends writing from understanding and checking the result against the original. A citation remains necessary when you express an author’s ideas in your own words. Before rewriting, find the parts you cannot lose

For the commuter passage, jot down four anchors: interviews, first-year commuters, one university, no examination measure. You may not need the number 24 in every use of the finding, but you must not make the reader believe this is a representative survey of all students or an experiment on grades. Decide what can be omitted according to the job the sentence does in your paragraph.

Read the surrounding text before extracting a sentence. An author may state a possibility in the discussion after reporting a narrower result. Your paraphrase should preserve that distinction. If the passage says an explanation may account for the finding, do not introduce it with ‘the study demonstrated’.

Technical terms often need to remain. Replacing a defined construct with a loosely related synonym can make the paraphrase less accurate. Use an established term where necessary, give attribution, and reserve quotation marks for distinctive wording you reproduce exactly. Originality comes from your sentence and its role in the argument, not from changing every noun.

Repair this sentence before reading the answer

Original practice passage

Among 60 library users who completed the survey, longer opening hours were associated with higher reported satisfaction. The survey was administered once, after the schedule changed.

Draft to repair

Extending library hours caused students to become more satisfied over time.

Pause and identify the unsupported parts. Who participated? What relationship was measured? Was there a before-and-after measure? Then write a replacement sentence without looking back at the source’s wording.

One possible repair

A survey of 60 library users linked longer opening hours with higher self-reported satisfaction, although the single measurement after the change cannot show how individual satisfaction developed over time (fictional practice source).

The repair restores the sample, the reported measure, and the design boundary. It avoids asserting that opening hours caused the difference.

Other answers can work. You could lead with the design limitation if your paragraph compares methods. You could shorten the finding if the study has already been introduced. What matters is that your reader can recover the same claim and identify its source. There is no required percentage of words to replace.

Sometimes the exact wording is the evidence

If you are analyzing a speech, a definition, or an interviewee’s choice of words, quotation may be the better decision. A paraphrase of the phrase you are interpreting can remove the very feature your analysis depends on. Introduce the quotation, supply the required locator, and explain what you want the reader to notice.

For a broad overview of a paper, summarize. For a particular finding or argument, paraphrase at the level of detail your claim needs. Do not disguise a whole-paper summary as evidence for a precise claim the study never makes. Keep a locator in your notes even when your citation style does not require one for every paraphrase.

If you have only read an author discussing someone else’s study, make that relationship clear. Retrieve the original when possible. Otherwise use your style’s secondary-source convention; do not imply you checked a paper you have not seen.

Give the paraphrase a job in your argument

Use the evidence, then mark your interpretation

Access needs to be considered alongside students’ schedules. In the fictional commuter study, interviewees described using recordings around travel disruption. This suggests a practical question for course design: when can students reliably reach the material? It does not establish that recordings improve attainment.

The source supplies an account of use. The next sentence introduces the writer’s question. The final sentence prevents that reasoning from becoming an unsupported claim about grades.

Keep quotation, paraphrase, and your interpretation visibly separate in your notes so they remain distinguishable during drafting. If a rewrite sounds more certain than the source, go back to the source before polishing it further. Keep traceable literature review notes

Before keeping your sentence, ask whether it preserves the finding, identifies the source, and serves your own argument. If the meaning is now right but the prose still feels awkward, revise the language in a separate pass. Improve academic English without changing meaning
