How to write a nursing literature review for a class assignment

By Fikri Ghazi · Thezis ·

Stack of worn hardcover books beside an open spiral notebook and black pen on a wooden desk, ready for nursing literature-review notes.

A nursing literature review answers a question with published studies. It is not a stack of article summaries, a systematic review, or a recommendation to change practice unless your assignment asks for that. Copy the source rules from your prompt first. Then compare what the studies actually measured.

1. Identify the review you were actually assigned

How exhaustive the search must be depends on the project. A class paper is not a dissertation, and neither is a systematic review. Write down the source count, date window, and whether primary studies are required before you outline. University of Alberta: conducting a nursing literature review

Planning distinctions. Your instructor’s assignment still decides the required form.

Regis notes that you stop searching when the same articles keep returning and when the paper’s length is in view. That stop rule belongs to a course review, not to a comprehensive review protocol. Regis College: how to write a nursing literature review

2. Write a question the literature can answer

Fictional classroom assignment

Write an 800–1,000 word literature review for a nursing course. Question: What do published studies report about knowledge outcomes and learner experience when nursing students receive spaced learning? Use at least three primary research articles. Organize the body by theme. Do not recommend a curriculum change as if it had already been implemented.

The prompt, length, and source count are invented for teaching. The studies below are real. This is an academic-writing exercise, not a recommendation to change a nursing curriculum.

Too broad versus searchable

Too broad: spaced learning in nursing. Searchable for this assignment: knowledge outcomes and learner experience in spaced-learning studies of nursing students.

If a first search returns almost nothing eligible, the question is often too narrow or outside the assigned nursing role. Check that before you write.

If the course wants PICOT, write the question from the rubric before you collect articles. A later search cannot rescue a question the course will reject. Write a PICOT question.

Screen articles against the assignment, not only against the topic. GWU’s BSN guide also describes starting from a seed article and following citations; record that route separately from a database query. GWU Himmelfarb: BSN literature review

Article eligibility is a separate job from writing the review. Find nursing research articles for PICOT.

3. Build a comparison table before drafting

UCA describes synthesis as connecting sources around a shared theme, not summarizing each article in turn. A matrix makes those connections visible before you write. UCA Nursing: what a literature review synthesizes

Filled matrix for the fictional assignment, based on the original articles. Your rubric may ask for different columns.

ECU’s RN-to-BSN matrix uses a similar layout: citation, purpose, methods, findings, notes. Copy your course’s columns if they differ. ECU RN-to-BSN: literature review matrix

If you cannot fill a row from the article, read it again before drafting. Skimming the abstract is not enough for a claim you will cite. Read a nursing research article.

4. Group by theme, not by article

UNC describes a literature review as summary plus synthesis, organized by an idea rather than by source. Wisconsin’s nursing guide is blunt: discussing studies in isolation from each other is not a review. UNC Writing Center: literature reviews

Article-by-article outline (avoid this)

I. Khalafi et al. (2024): what they did II. Ranjbar et al. (2024): what they did III. Mc Veigh et al. (2022): what they did IV. Conclusion

The reader has to invent the relationship. Your assignment asked for themes.

Theme outline for the fictional prompt

I. Knowledge outcomes in spaced-learning studies of nursing students II. Learner experience, including satisfaction and usability III. What remains unknown, including the split between knowledge and clinical performance

Each heading can hold more than one source. Mc Veigh belongs in experience, not in the knowledge comparison.

Wisconsin also warns against filling a review with disease definitions, signs, and treatments that are not research findings. Stay on the question. UW–Madison Ebling: conducting a nursing literature review

5. Write one annotated synthesis paragraph

Original synthesis paragraph

Classroom studies of spaced learning in nursing education do not report one combined result. On knowledge tests, Khalafi et al. (2024) found higher scores after spaced lectures than after a conventional lecture among nurse anesthesia students, including delayed assessments. Ranjbar et al. (2024) also reported higher knowledge scores after spaced online instruction through one month. Those findings sit together only as knowledge outcomes; lecture and online delivery remain different interventions. Learner experience is a second theme. Ranjbar found no significant difference in satisfaction, and Mc Veigh et al. (2022) described usability and acceptability in a mixed-methods pilot without a knowledge test. A review that treated the three papers as proof that spaced learning works would erase the outcome split the studies actually show.

The opening names the relationship. Each citation has a job. The last sentence is the writer’s comparison, not a fourth study result.

Claim-to-source audit for the paragraph. Keep interpretation on its own row.
Claim in the exampleWhere to checkBoundary
Khalafi: higher knowledge scores after spaced lecturesMethod; ResultsDo not substitute clinical performance.
Ranjbar: knowledge scores; no significant satisfaction differenceMethods; ResultsKnowledge was assessed, not practical skills.
Mc Veigh: experience and usability, not a knowledge testMethods and design; ResultsDo not use the pilot as a third controlled knowledge comparison.
Do not collapse the three papers into one success storyThe writer’s comparisonDifferent interventions and different outcomes.

The general synthesis guide uses fictional studies to isolate the writing move. This paragraph uses the same move with the nursing articles above. How to synthesize a literature review.

Frederiksen and Phelps’s open textbook, written for graduate nursing and education students, walks through writing the review after the matrix exists. Use it for process, not as your undergraduate word count. Frederiksen & Phelps: writing the literature review (ch. 8)

6. Check the draft against the assignment

  • Does every section answer the assigned question, not a neighboring topic?
  • Are the body paragraphs organized by theme rather than by article?
  • Can I open the original and point to the support for each factual claim?
  • Did I keep knowledge, satisfaction, skill, and patient outcomes separate?
  • Do in-text citations match the reference list?
  • Did I avoid recommending a practice change the assignment did not ask me to make?
  • Does the submitted text follow this course’s assistance policy?

A dated teaching rubric used in nursing courses assessed comparison of findings, gaps, and implications for practice. Use it only as a reminder of criteria some instructors grade. Do not copy its old article-date cutoff or treat it as your current rubric. Lassetter nursing literature-review rubric (dated teaching example, hosted by Utica)

Keep source notes retrievable while you revise. Empty fields in the matrix are useful: they show what to check before you submit. Organize literature-review notes.
