A thesis is too long to keep in one giant document and too important to scatter across ten apps. The right software stack makes each handoff recoverable: source to note, note to chapter, chapter to feedback, feedback to revision.

A spreadsheet can be enough for synthesis. Give each row a source, question, method, finding, limitation, and the chapter where it may matter. The purpose is to compare research, not to produce an elaborate dashboard.
1. Zotero and a chapter plan - Set up your thesis
- Choose one reference manager and import five papers you already know are relevant.
- Write the thesis question at the top of a chapter plan and give each chapter a job.
- Create a repeatable file naming and backup routine.
- Find your department’s required template before drafting a long chapter.
This setup sounds administrative, but it pays off when a supervisor asks you to move an argument or replace a weak source. If the source record and chapter plan are stable, revision becomes a smaller decision.
2. Thezis, Word, or Overleaf - Draft chapters
Draft by question, not by page count. For one subsection, list the claim it must make, the two or three sources it needs, and the uncertainty to preserve. Write the first paragraph before asking any assistant to expand or rephrase it.
Use Thezis for the writing layer when you want to develop a long argument section by section. Keep the full reference library in Zotero and perform final formatting in the tool your program requires.
Make feedback easy to act on
Does section 2.3 establish why my sample is relevant to the research question? I am unsure whether the second study belongs here or in the limitations chapter.
This gives a reader a decision to make. ‘Please review my chapter’ often returns broad comments that are hard to translate into edits.
After a meeting, write an action list in your own words. Separate changes to the argument from wording changes; the first group usually changes what evidence you need.
3. Zotero and your department template - Prepare submission
- Open a recent backup and confirm it contains the latest chapter.
- Trace a sample of claims to original sources and page locators.
- Run the required citation style and inspect the bibliography manually.
- Export the final format, open it on another device, and check headings, figures, and page breaks.
