How to write a thesis conclusion without repeating the discussion

By Fikri Ghazi · Thezis ·

Landscape view of a finished manuscript, reading glasses, and a pen on a desk at the end of a writing session.

The conclusion is where you answer the thesis question in the light of the whole project. It should not replay every result or turn a modest study into a universal claim.

Give the conclusion a different job from the discussion

A useful distinction when both chapters are required.
DiscussionConclusion
Interprets individual findings in relation to literature.States the overall answer that emerges from the project.
Works through tensions, alternatives, and limits in detail.Selects the limits that shape how the overall answer should be used.
May follow the order of findings.Returns to the thesis question and contribution.

Departments vary: some integrate discussion and conclusion, and some expect a brief final chapter. Let the local thesis guide decide the headings; use the distinction to avoid redundancy. University of Melbourne: Thesis conclusions

End at the scale of your evidence

A measured closing move

This thesis found that the interviewed commuter students treated reliable access to study space as a scheduling issue, not only a question of seat numbers. The interview design cannot establish how common this pattern is, but it suggests that future campus surveys should measure predictability of access alongside capacity. For administrators, the implication is a question to investigate rather than a claim that one policy will solve the problem.

The fictional example answers the question, names the limit, and gives a proportionate implication.
